Blue-Green Algae: The Good & the Bad

Since the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) has published notices regarding blue-green algae in some Kansas waters, there might be an interest in learning more about these organisms. Blue-green algae are actually cyanobacteria that can either benefit humans or adversely impact humans. The KDWPT rightfully warns when toxic cyanobacteria form blooms in any Kansas waters since their toxins can harm the nervous system and other organs in humans and animals. For those interested in learning more about cyanobacteria, you may visit two excellent web pages from Canada that are particularly good at expanding your knowledge without getting too deep. Both these sources contain information that apply to blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) anywhere.  Check out <http://environment.gov.ab.ca/info/library/7673.pdf> as well as
