KWF board member, Matt Nowak, is a forester and wildlife manager for Fort Leavenworth and he also knows how to make use of deer antler sheds. Matt makes antler buttons and necklace pendants from the sheds. "It all started with my need for a fastener for some of the felted handbags that I was making and I realized that the tine
tips made great fasteners. Then I also realized that the antlers looked almost like agates when sliced and highly polished for buttons." Matt says that the buttons take a lot of sanding and polishing to look good, but that they are popular when done well. He also is willing to either trade for sheds or buy them so that he can continue to make buttons and fasteners.
